Interesting Info about Afghan Hounds

Characteristics

Afghan Hound dogs present a height of between 63 and 74 centimeters and a weight of between 20 and 30 kilograms. They can have a variety of different coat colors, in such a way that some of them might be white, others red, others brown, others black, or even bicolor, as for example white with black, although this last case is often seen as a sign of impure breeding.

Temperament

The temperament of the Afghan Hound dog usually is playful and at the same time somehow distant and distinguished. Besides this, this breed is often described as independent and not so responsive to commands or obedient as other breeds are, being this way sometimes difficult to train.

The history of the breed

According to experts, the Afghan Hound is one of the most ancient dog breeds. This breed has existed for several thousands of years, and for some experts is not very clear if their origin is from Afghanistan or Russia. This breed did not become popular in Europe and America until the 20th century.

Care

Afghan Hound dogs, as most other dog breeds, need daily exercise and, when living in enclosed areas, should be taken for walks and exercise periodically. Besides this, it is important that they can reach fresh water easily, and during high temperature seasons their water should be maintained away from sun rays and at a fresh spot, since due to their long coat this breed need to be able to refresh easily.

The coat of an Afghan Hound implies special attention due to its length. The coat of an Afghan Hound should be brushed during the bath and when is wet, and should not be brushed while being dry since brushing it in that condition could cause it to look damaged and loose some of its brightness.
